“Plane Crazy” was actually the first Mickey Mouse cartoon created by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks. It was initially produced as a silent film and completed in early 1928. However, upon its initial release on May 15, 1928, “Plane Crazy” failed to attract a distributor.

It wasn’t until after the success of “Steamboat Willie,” which introduced synchronized sound to animation and became a sensation, that Disney decided to add sound to “Plane Crazy” as well. This decision was made to capitalize on the newfound popularity of synchronized sound in animation.

Therefore, while “Plane Crazy” was the first Mickey Mouse cartoon created, “Steamboat Willie” ended up being released first with synchronized sound, making it the official debut of Mickey Mouse.
