Another illustration from another Mickey Mouse classic that’s now in the public domain — Gallopin’ Gaucho. I created the illustration using Procreate on my iPad (with Apple Pencil) and then colored it in Photoshop. Mickey is riding on the back of a rhea, which is a large flightless bird native to South America. It’s sometimes referred to as a South American ostrich due to its similar appearance, but it’s actually a different species.
One interesting fact about “Gallopin’ Gaucho” is that it was actually the second Mickey Mouse cartoon ever produced, even though it was released after “Steamboat Willie.” It was initially created as a silent film, like many early cartoons, but was later re-released with synchronized sound.
